Across Africa, the lion (Panthera Leo) is the apex predator. Lions play a crucial role in regulating the numbers of other animals, especially herbivores like zebra and wildebeest which in turn controls over-grazing. The remains of their kills provide food for scavenger animals; mammals, insects and birds like vultures many species of which are endangered. Removing one link from a healthy ecosystem has a severe influence on the system as a whole. However the lion population across Africa is in decline. The statistical estimates are alarming:
200K
the number of lions in Africa in 1900
90K
the number of lions in Africa in 1970
±25K
the number of lions in Africa in 2024
25
the number of countries in Africa where lions are now extinct
24
the remaining number of countries in Africa where lions still roam free
To promote the conservation, preservation and sustainable utilization of all flora and fauna and other natural resources ensuring both ecological and economic sustainability for the long-term benefit of all species.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
THE CHALLENGE
In 2021, the South African government pledged to end the exploitation of lions through captive breeding and commercialized trading of lions leaving the future of an estimated 8000 (approximate) ranched lions in South Africa in question. The Lion Rescue Project provides an alternate solution that will not only find new homes for these lions across Southern Africa, but will also boost the declining wild populations of lions throughout Africa.

THE WAY FORWARD
The Lion Recue Project is located in the northernmost province of Limpopo in South Africa, on the border of the Greater Kruger - one of the largest "big game" conservation area in the world. Our dedicated conservationists all of whom work on a strictly volunteer basis, have committed their time and talents to the rewilding of ranched lions back into vetted and secure conservation areas within Southern Africa.

MEET THE TEAM
The team of volunteers at the Lion Rescue Project consists of dedicated and qualified individuals who are passionate about the rewilding process. With a total of over two hundred years of experience, across the team, each individual brings valuable skills to the table and is committed to its success.
